A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
